cad jobs
The professionals who work in CAD jobs are draughtsmen who produce technical drawings with the aid of computer software for the design and installation of mechanical, electrical and public health services to make a building 'come alive'.
CAD technician jobs can be split up by role as follows:
Technicians make minor alterations using single line diagrams; Draughters vary in ability from basic mark-ups of drawings from Design Engineers to highly skilled overall design concept of a project; Coordinators look after all services on a single drawing ensuring there are no clashes; Lead Coordinators often supervise teams of draughtsmen on projects; CAD Managers are responsible for the technical drawings and coordinating draughters on several projects.
Qualifications and software used in CAD jobs
Most employers use AutoCAD software, so a relevant qualification or proven working knowledge is mandatory. AutoCAD in 2D is the most widely used software package but increasingly 3D and Revit MEP is set to supercede as this as a more intelligent package and is widely used in the US. Microstation is another software package used.
Qualifications vary from traineeships to City & Guilds/BTEC/HNC/ONC or even Engineering graduates. Moving up the career ladder very much depends on experience and projects/software worked on. The majority of employers require CAD Coordinators who have experience in Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health services.
